Sir Albert Howard and the Organic Grower Movement

01

Introduction

The University Club is an academic and co-curricular platform established to encourage students to develop knowledge, awareness, practical understanding, and responsible attitudes towards agriculture, horticulture, soil health, environmental sustainability, and organic cultivation.

The theme “Sir Albert Howard and the Organic Grower Movement” provides an opportunity for students to understand the historical development of organic agriculture and the importance of maintaining healthy soil for sustainable plant growth. Sir Albert Howard (1873–1947) was a British agricultural scientist who spent a major part of his professional career working in India. His observations and experiments in India made an important contribution to the development of ideas concerning soil fertility, organic matter, composting, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Howard strongly emphasized the importance of maintaining soil fertility through the recycling of organic materials. His work is particularly associated with the Indore Process, a systematic method of compost preparation developed through his work at Indore. The process involved the controlled decomposition of plant and animal wastes to produce compost that could be returned to agricultural soil.

The theme also encourages students to understand agriculture as an interconnected system involving soil, plants, organic matter, microorganisms, water, biodiversity, and human responsibility.
